Seen

Seen - that moment of connection when you look, and realise you are being looked at in return.
The painting originally began as a demonstration piece for my six-week beginner course and had no background. But as his face developed, his expression became so direct and present that I felt he needed to be truly seen. I added the darker background deliberately, allowing him to emerge from the shadows and drawing even more attention to his eyes.
What developed was a kind of exchange between subject and viewer. You are drawn towards his gaze, but at the same time there is the feeling that he is looking back, noticing you, acknowledging you, and for a moment, making you feel seen in return.
