Longing
Longing - that quiet ache for somewhere, something or someone just beyond reach.
The painting began with a boat scene at sunset, but as I worked I found myself moving away from realism. I wanted the image to become softer, more atmospheric and less defined, allowing the light, water and distant forms to dissolve into one another.
As the painting loosened, it began to take on a life of its own. The boats became less about a particular place and more about distance, atmosphere and the pull of somewhere beyond the immediate moment. Longing emerged from that sense of being drawn towards something you can feel, even when you cannot quite name or reach it.
